I was very excited when I heard that my CSL placement was at my old high school Notre Dame. It was attending this school that made me join the Urban Cohort. On the first week we just a received a tour of the school and talked about what we we're going to do. After the tour I went around and found some of my old teachers! Many of them were very surprised but happy to see me, even if it made them feel old. This past week was the first full day. I got to meet my Associate Teacher (AT) and spend sometime in his class. He teaches all grade 7 classes, in religion, social studies, math, and science. My world got even smaller than just being at my old high school. My AT told me that my grandfather had taught him at St. Pius and that my grandfather's the reason he wanted to become a teacher! I observed in his classes for most of the day. The most exciting part for me in the day was when a student in a religion class sparked a discussion on addiction. Since I just finished a B. Sc. in Psychology, my AT called on me as an expert. It was nice to be able to use my expertise, the kids were very interested and even continued to ask me questions later on in the day.
As for the community service portion of my visit, me and the other student teachers went to a CHOICES meeting at lunch. CHOICES is a student run organization which chooses a societal issue relevant to teens and raises awareness. for the past few years they have tackled dating violence among teens and social media usage. They showed us some amazing music videos they've made remixing songs. "From Time": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnSxo842z7Q. I look forward to working with these kids on whatever issue they choose. I will also be helping my old rugby coach with the team as well as helping with the hockey team as much as I can.
